Established in 2003, Vance Engineering, Inc. (VEI) provides civil engineering design, land planning and construction period professional services on a wide range of project types for a broad client base. With expertise in site planning and circulation; site grading; drainage and hydrologic studies; roadway design; storm water quality design, including low impact development (LID) features and measures to meet Federal and State mandated requirements, VEI brings the needed solutions to your project. We understand that, for most of our Clients, civil engineering is not generally the most exciting part of their project. However, it is extremely important to the overall finished and, ultimately, their satisfaction with the project. In general, the best civil engineering goes unnoticed. It is in the site grades that blend and work well with adjacent properties, in the storm and sanitary sewer systems that work inconspicuously, and in the fine details that transition curbs and pavement to walkways and building entrances. A successful project requires well thought design, along with regular and complete communication between the Client/Owner, Architect, other engineering disciplines and jurisdictional authorities. Our focus is on designing value into our Clients’ projects and on developing good working relationships with all parties involved. We are continually looking for the most economical and cost-effective solutions to meet budget goals and Clients’ desires, and our team of professionals regularly review new products and design techniques toward that end. These commitments to quality, service, and to keeping abreast of innovative products and design solutions are the basis of our success, and have resulted in a broad base of repeat Clients.
VEI uses the latest Civil 3D software by Autodesk for the bulk of our design and plan production work. We use various other software packages, such as Pondpack, for storm water detention design, hydraulic calculations and other design elements, as appropriate. These software packages are great production and coordination tools when used in combination with good engineering judgment.
Regular and complete communication with our Clients, other design team members, and the various review / permitting agencies and utilities has been key to our success. By maintaining good lines of communication as an integral part of our process, we are able to keep abreast of changes and issues as they happen so that we can react immediately, when appropriate.
Utilities are often a critical path item, for both cost and timeline. As such, we initiate contacts at the beginning of the project to get their concerns and requirements. We then keep them informed and work together, as appropriate, throughout the project. It has been our experience that these efforts will often improve response time of the various utilities during construction.
As we begin a project we develop an outline of the major phases and detailed scope of services to be done under each item. We identify critical path items that will need to be complete to avoid delay elsewhere in the process, and we have regular meetings, both internally and with our sub-consultants, to review progress, discuss issues and to make sure that critical path items are progressing. This not only keeps the project on track, it helps to forecast man-hours and workload.
We set an initial schedule with milestone dates and, with regular meetings and communications, we move forward, continually updating and monitoring the progress. Communication is the key to success of any project and we strive daily to keep our Clients abreast of the status and condition of their project, understanding the importance that they see the regular progress as promised.
